Media Release by Tyran Moore, Alesha Podboy and Miranda Jones
3 September 2012
MEDIA RELEASE
Students of the Portland Re-Engagement Program, an off-campus facility of Portland Secondary College, are holding an exhibition entitled Paste-Ups, at the Portland Arts Centre.
The idea behind the exhibition is to promote awareness of local and Australian endangered species.
Being conscious of the environment, the group used recycled movie posters as the main material for their art work.
The posters were painted leaving one element as a starting point for the artwork.
Other techniques used included collage, stamping and outlines of projected images of endangered species.
Over 30 students have been working with local Portland artist Catherine Bailey as part of their Personal Development studies over the past semester to mount the exhibition.
The Re-Engagement students attend daily lessons in all areas of school curriculum at the YMCA Community House, enabling them to continue their studies in a more engaging, hands-on and personalised educational experience.
Participant Miranda Jones said the project had been worthwhile enabling them to develop a wide range of skills.
“We have enjoyed working together to strengthen our teamwork, organisation and leadership skills.
“We have also been actively involved in the promotion of the event through media outlets, and the organisation of an opening function,” she said.
The exhibition is showing for one month only from Wednesday 19 September until Friday 12 October.
The Portland Arts Centre is situated on the corner of Glenelg and Bentinck streets and is open Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm. Entry is free.
Ends
